The refrigeration cycle works by compressing heat and moving it in one direction or the other. 

Insulate your house from outside which will minimize heat loss from the house winter time and heat gain from outside summertime. Then optimize ductwork and at the end install high efficiency equipment.

You should have your systems serviced right before each cooling and heating season starts. Frequently small and inexpensive capacitor can go bad and cause motor failure.

Change air filters on time (whenever it's dirty) , wash you outdoor unit's coil with water.
